Eucomis vandermerwei POTTED

Plant type: Bulb

Availability : available now
Eucomis vandermerwei is a lovely rock garden or container subject and extremely rare in it's native home of South Africa. The leaves are long, slender and well-spotted usually with rippled edges. Bring containers into a cold greenhouse in winter and keep dry until growth starts in mid Spring. 3 to 5 buobs fill a 9" terracotta bowl. In a sheltered rock garden, plant with plenty of grit underneath and a 2" covering of fine grit on the surface.

Eucomis are of South African origin.

Eucomis originate in Southern Africa and are commonly known as 'Pineapple Lilies' due to the obvious resemblance of the flower head and its crown of leafy bracts. The display lasts from summer to late autumn which is exceptional for a bulb. They make excellent container plants and are lovely in the border. Water and feed well whilst in growth, but keep the soil dry in winter. Eucomis are surprisingly hardy provided they have a winter mulch and good drainage.
